To me, it makes little sense that a homeowners insurer would refuse to cover liability risk for someone driving a 49 cc motor scooter, yet willingly provide Section 2 liability coverage for a policyholder owning an AR-15 assault rifle and 4000 rounds of ammunition at no additional costs. Admittedly, I am unaware of the aggregate insurance payments made for gunshot injuries and defense costs, but if it is a significant amount is it reasonable to spread these costs to policyholders who chose not to own similar weapons? Other than placing total exclusions on firearms, I fail to see how any semantics in policy wording will insulate Homeowner’s insurers from firearms risk. Personally, I think the only way to evoke societal change would be to require firearms risk to be born by firearms industry affiliated insurers who might use their own underwriting experience to affect industry sales. Organizations such as the NRA would be well postured to provide such coverage thought forms similar to what were deemed fraternal risk selection.
